Summary

Jackie Robinson became the first ever black player in the major leagues, when he signed to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1947 Robinson was named Rookie of the Year, in 1949 National League MVP, and was a World Series champion in 1955. Throughout his decade long career with the Dogers, Robinson made many important advancements in the cause of civil rights for black athletes.

April 15 is national Jackie Robinson Day. On this day it has become a major tradition that every year, all major league baseball players wear a number 42 jersey in honor of Robinson. The day is a celebration of the legend Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in sports. It is celebrated on this day because it comes on the anniversary of Robinson's first ever home baseball game on April 15, 1947.
